Seagulls get big win against SLO Blues, despite struggles
The San Francisco Seagulls endured a tough five-game road trip, coming away with just one win and finishing the week 1-4. The team now stands at 8-23 on the season, with only two weeks of games remaining.
The week opened with a narrow 9-8 loss to the Arroyo Seco Saints on July 9. Despite a strong offensive push in the eighth inning, the Seagulls couldn't add on, dropping another heartbreaker in a season filled with close calls.
The following day, the Seagulls traveled to face the Conejo Oaks, where they held a lead late in the game, only to see the bullpen allow 13 runs over the final two innings in a 16-6 loss.
On July 11, the Seagulls bounced back in a big way with a dominant win over the SLO Blues. The offense exploded for 15 runs, marking a season high, and the bullpen held strong to secure one of the team's most complete wins of the season. Unfortunately, the momentum didn't carry over. In back-to-back games on July 12 and 13, both against the Blues, the Seagulls managed just one run total, falling 6-0 and 7-1.
The offense stalled, and defensive errors contributed to the team's continued struggles. The Seagulls have a lighter week ahead of them, with just a home game later tonight against South Bay Storm, a familiar foe among the Seagulls 22 years of existence. Most recently, the Seagulls beat the Storm to win the Golden State Collegiate League championship during the 2022 season.
With the end of July approaching, the Seagulls will look to regroup and find consistency as they head into the final stretch of summer play.
Players of the Week:
● Pitcher of the Week: Finn Whalen
Whalen turned in a standout performance on the mound this past week, throwing seven strong innings while allowing just two runs. He struck out nine batters, walked only two, and finished the week with an impressive 0.00 ERA.
● Hitter of the Week: Alan Ramirez
Ramirez led the charge at the plate, batting .400 for the week with eight hits, three runs scored, and five RBIs. He also drew three walks and posted a .478 OPS, continuing to be a reliable force in the Seagulls' lineup.
