San Francisco Seagulls Weekend Recap June 15-21, 2026
Heading into their three-game road trip last week, the Seagulls were on a seven-game losing streak, looking to grab any momentum to restore confidence after an underwhelming 2-7 start to the season.
However, the offense continued to lack cohesion, extending their losing streak into double digits while allowing a combined 30 runs in the three away games.
On Thursday, San Francisco faced the Sonoma Stompers to finish their road trip where they showed a ton of fight down the stretch.
After a Tino Vasell grand slam and a five-run first inning from the Stompers, the Seagulls battled back as junior outfielder Derek Waldvogel tied it up in the top of the eighth with an RBI single. Despite their resilience, the comeback would fall short as Sonoma answered with three runs and great fielding to ice an 8-5 victory.
Even with the loss, there was plenty to feed off of in hopes of getting back on track and snapping their losing streak. The Seagulls would have to wait another day though after an 11-1 loss to the Walnut Creek Crawdads in their return home to Tom Lara Field.
San Francisco hadn't scored more than five runs since their June 6th 14-12 loss to Sonoma, but the lineup and pitching staff finally began to complement each other, showcased in an 8-3 win over the Philippines Baseball Group.
The Philippines Baseball Group would strike first to open the game, but two four-run innings in the first and seventh would give the Seagulls the type of control they needed to play their own brand of baseball.
At the plate, eight out of the nine batters in the lineup recorded a hit with every batter reaching base. Junior infielder Jake Brewer and senior catcher Marcus Graham each collected two RBIs while sophomore first baseman Christian LaMothe ripped three hits.
On the mound, manager Marc Caviglia only had to cycle through three arms. Sophomore right-hander Finn Whalen made a resilient start, pitching 5 ⅔ innings and punching out four batters on his way to recording his second win of the season.
In relief, it was more of the same as redshirt freshman left-hander Ted Tsouras finished with four strikeouts, including a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Meanwhile, sophomore right-hander Matt Potter closed the deal for the Seagulls with two strikeouts of his own in the ninth.
After snapping an 11-game losing streak, Caviglia and San Francisco looked to have found something ahead of their three-game series against the Menlo Park Legends as an early lineup card showed no personnel changes.
However, an injury resulted in senior outfielder and recent Utah commit Davis Germann becoming a late scratch ahead of Sunday's game. Without the consistent hitting of Germann, it proved costly as the top of the order was left on base a combined seven times.
Despite their struggles at the dish, on the other side, sophomore left-hander Joe Steidel made the start for the Seagulls, striking out four batters while keeping San Francisco within striking distance through five innings.
Redshirt freshman left-hander Taylor Easthope would pitch a no-hitter in two innings of relief. However, it wouldn't matter as the Seagulls couldn't capitalize on several prime opportunities offensively.
San Francisco's pitching has a found their sense of direction, but they'll need to find some sustained offensive success as they finish their series against Menlo Park on Wednesday before entering a tough weekend slate starting on Thursday where they'll play the Walnut Creek Crawdads three times in four days.
